Anonymous asked: Why do we lose so much of ourselves when we get older? I mean in terms of wanderlust, creativity, elation in the little things, joy in good conversation... Is it worth getting to that point?

In general, I’d say that with age and experience there is the tendency to think one’s particular understanding of the world is correct. It’s easy to get bogged down in thinking we know how things are or how they ought to be, instead of being open to the unknown elements of a new experience (or, for that matter, the mundane elements of a common experience that we’ve systematically conditioned ourselves to not notice nor appreciate) that may revise an old disposition or prejudice.

The best way to avoid this happening is to become and stay aware of just how little we really know. It helps the mind stay curious. And the curious mind is one that wants to travel and experience the world, feels creative and expressive, finds mundane things fascinating or even beautiful and is able to appreciate a good conversation.

Anonymous asked: When you jerk-off, do you fantasize about clowns? Ever?

Not a single iota of my mind associates clowns with sex.

Anonymous asked: What is the meaning of life? What happens to us when we die?

  1. If there was a ‘meaning of life’ in the sense I assume you mean, it follows that there would be purpose intended in humans existing. If purpose is intended, then there must be an agent intending the purpose for the object (i.e., the human race). I believe, however, that the most pragmatic and ethically responsible explanatory model of the totality of existence available, with respect to the facts as they are now (i.e., what we know about the world so far), is one in which there is no higher agent determining or intending the purpose of human existence. Therefore, I don’t only think that your first question is not worth answering, I think that it’s not worth asking. Silence is golden.
  2. When we die, we cease to exist in any meaningful sense. The consciousness ceases. The body decomposes.
  3. Finally, neither of these positions are pessimistic, just humanistic.
